We all travel a lot more now than our parents did. I just got back from the US Virgin islands and it seems our world is becoming smaller and more reachable every year.

I think this is a good thing because it certainly helps us understand different cultures, different people with different ways of living and working.  But there are a few essentials you should always check before setting off.

  • It may seem obvious, but many people don’t bother to find out the most basic things about the country they will travel to.  Not only should do this to avoid surprise or disappointment, but to me, it’s always fun.
  • Be sure to check on the kind of weather you’ll find where you’re going.  If you live in sunny Florida and travel to northern Ireland, you may be in for a shock unless you pack the correct travel clothes for the climate you’ll be traveling to.
  • Be sure that the medical and general insurance coverage you have is adequate for your destination.  Check out your travel insurance options, too.  I like AIG.
  • Do you have all the paperwork and documentation required for your trip?  A little research here will save time and possible disappointment later.
  • Are there any diseases you will need immunization against where you are going?  Check beforehand.
  • If you plan on driving during your travels, check that you have an acceptable licence. You may need an international driving licence, for example. The us and British Virgin islands require you drive on the left side of the road.  Be prepared and knowledgeable with the local driving laws.
  • Finally, and maybe the most overlooked thing to check is if your passport up to date? For a complete travel check list you can use for any trip, click here.
